Di AS, angka yang dikeluarkan pemerintah tahun lalu menunjukkan terjadi penurunan jumlah sarang sebesar 29 persen pada tahun 2009, merupakan yang terendah dibandingkan 36 dan 32 persen pada tahun 2008 dan 2007.

Penurunan misterius populasi lebah itu juga telah dilaporkan di Eropa, Jepang dan tempat lain dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, sehingga mengancam pertanian tanaman yang bergantung pada serangga madu sebagai perantara penyerbukan.

Ribuan pengunjung telah menyaksikan lebah bekerja dalam sebuah sarang kaca yang dirancang khusus dan cukup populer yang dipamerkan di galeri keanekaragaman hayati, Royal Ontario Museum dalam dua tahun terakhir.

Mereka sangat sehat hingga pekan lalu ketika mereka tiba-tiba mati dalam sarangnya. Museum tersebut telah mengesampingkan kelaparan atau kesalahan staf sebagai penyebab kematian.

Dugaan sementara, ventilasi yang buruk, parasit atau sedikitnya lebah pekerja untuk menjaga sarang tetap hangat selama musim dingin bisa menjadi penyebab kematian.
